The discovery of Sainte-Marie is a gift for those who wish to relax in a peaceful place! This offer is specially designed for nature lovers. Departing from Antananarivo, the capital, you will take the famous National Road No. 2. If you are passionate about lemurs and dream of seeing them up close, admiring them, approaching them, or even having them jump on your shoulders and hearing their cries, choose the East Coast! You won’t be disappointed! I say this because many clients typically choose southern, southwestern, or western destinations to enjoy the sun. But remember, where it rains, there is water, and where there is water, there is life.
So, welcome to the East Coast!
A little tip: from the end of August to the end of December are the best months to spend your vacation on the East Coast up to Sainte-Marie Island!

Day One: Antananarivo
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Malagasy capital, Antananarivo. The most spoken language on this island is Malagasy, but locals can also communicate in French. After the formalities at the airport, we will transfer you as quickly as possible to the hotel so you can relax and be ready for the next day’s program! The Zamilane team is eager to meet you!
Day Two: Antananarivo – Andasibe Park
The sun rises, Antananarivo wakes up, and the bags are ready: let’s go! Antananarivo is the capital of Madagascar (the largest city). Although not located in the geographic center of the country, it is the political, economic, and cultural center. It is situated on the high plateaus in the central region of Madagascar.
A unique city, an exceptional capital, because in its heart still exist rice fields, indicating that rice is the staple food of the local population. All the houses in the highlands are built of bricks, not wood!
After several hundred kilometers, you will visit the Peyrieras Reserve. The Peyrieras Reserve, also known as “Madagascar Exotique,” is a private nature reserve located 75 km east of the capital. You can see chameleons, uroplatus, geckos, amphibians, etc.
After the visit, you will continue your journey to Andasibe, located not far from the reserve!
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day Three: Andasibe Park – Ankaninofy
After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit the national park managed by Madagascar National Parks for about 3 hours. It is the second most visited park after Isalo Park, thanks to its geographical location, ease of access, and the opportunity to easily observe wildlife.
The park is home to exceptional flora and fauna, such as orchids, tree ferns, and many other endemic plants. As for the fauna, the Indri-Indri is the emblematic animal of this park. It is the largest lemur on the island of Madagascar.
After visiting the park, you will continue your journey to the famous Pangalanes Canal, with a picnic lunch along the way. After a few kilometers, you will arrive at the shores of Lake Rasoa Be, where you will embark towards your dream nest. You will pass through three lakes and one canal: Rasoa Be, Rasoa Masay, and Lake Ampitabe. The Pangalanes Canal, which stretches from the north of Foulpointe to the south of Mananjary, for about 640 km, is the second longest canal in the world after the Suez Canal. However, due to human activities, particularly deforestation, a significant portion of this canal is no longer navigable. The chicest place on the canal is Ankanin’ny Nofy, or “Dream Nest,” where you will stay.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day Four: Ankanin’ny Nofy
After breakfast, you will take a daytime visit to the Palmarium Reserve. This is a 3-hour visit during which your local guide will introduce you to the local flora, including Euphorbia milis, various species of palms, orchids, pepper plants, and ferns, not to mention the carnivorous plant. As for the fauna, he will present more than 8 species of lemurs that may follow you around, as the guide brings along pieces of bananas. The lemurs will jump on your shoulders and make noises… The guide will continuously mimic the sounds of the lemurs until he shows you the largest lemur in Madagascar, the Indri Indri.
In the afternoon, after lunch, you will visit the fishing village of Andranokoditra.
In the late afternoon, you will board a boat again towards Aye-Aye Island. This will be a special moment to discover the largest nocturnal lemur in Madagascar.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day Five: Ankanin’ny Nofy – Toamasina
Toamasina, also known as Tamatave, is located sixty kilometers from Ankanin’ny Nofy. Along the canal, you will encounter many fishermen and locals transporting goods to the big city.
Around noon, you will arrive in Toamasina, the second-largest city in Madagascar, with approximately 611,993 inhabitants. It is a very important port, thanks to the existence of Madagascar’s largest port.
If time permits, we will visit the city, rich in history from the pirate era, the colonial period, and up to the present day!
Don’t forget to take a trip to Bazar Be to buy vanilla, as Toamasina’s vanilla is of very good quality. Other spices such as pepper, pink berries, turmeric, and nutmeg are also of excellent quality.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day Six: Soanierana-Ivongo – Sainte-Marie
Early morning departure to reach the Soanierana Ivongo pier to take the boat towards Sainte-Marie Island.
Seen from afar, the shape of Sainte-Marie Island extends parallel to the Great Island, protected by a coral barrier and lined with coconut palms. It is a paradise island: Sainte-Marie!
We arrive at Sainte-Marie Island, and it’s time to relax.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel by the sea, calm and relaxing.
Day Seven: Sainte-Marie
You will visit the pirate cemetery, the museum of Queen Betia, the daughter of a mixed-race pirate, as well as the first Catholic church on the island.
Upon arriving at Belle Vue, we will take a path to the pirate and corsair cemetery. Then, you will visit the museum located in the residence of Queen Betia on Île aux Madame, passing in front of the first Catholic church in Madagascar, founded in 1837 by Bishop Dalmond.
We will then continue north to the natural pool, an ideal swimming spot where the sea is a turquoise blue!
