Madagascar is an island in the Indian Ocean. The fifth largest in the world, it has a multitude of rivers. All the rivers play very important roles in the socio-economic life of the local people. Among the largest and most important is the Mangoky River, which crosses the west of the island over more than 500km. The Betsiboka river, in the north-east of Madagascar, is also a river that plays a very important role in the economy of the Peul people and is often used to transport goods from the countryside to the towns.
