Madagascar east coast destination
Madagascar east coast destination is known for its rich biodiversity and lush greenery. This green nature attracts many animals that populate the eastern forest, from the largest to the smallest. Mammals, such as lemurs, are abundant here and enjoy the leaves of the green plants. Reptiles, such as chameleons, lizards and geckos, climb trees in search of something to eat. Not only can you see the animals on the east coast, but you can also enjoy the lush green landscapes, white beaches and turquoise blue sea.
Most tourists visiting the Madagascan east coast choose the following places:
Andasibe: Andasibe is an ecotourism village located on the outskirts of the Analamazaotra Park. This park is the most visited after Isalo Park, due to the presence of Indri lemurs. The Indri is the largest lemur in Madagascar, weighing around 10 kg. It consumes 70 leaves a day from various plants growing in this park.
Manambato: Manambato is a tourist village on the banks of Lake Rasoabe, on the Pangalanes Canal. This site is highly recommended for lovers of beaches and quiet spots.
Palmarium: Palmarium is a reserve located near Lake Ampitabe, in Ankanin’ny Nofy, on the Canal des Pangalanes. This is a very rich reserve, offering the chance to observe day and night lemurs as well as plants endemic to the east coast. Palmarium is both a reserve and a hotel, offering tranquil accommodation.
Toamasina: Toamasina is the capital of the Atsinanana region. The city is known for having the largest port on the island. As well as being an economic and commercial centre, Toamasina is rich in tourist attractions. The town itself is already a historic site. In the surrounding area, you can visit other very interesting sites such as Ivoloina Park, Farafaty, Dobo Tahamasina (a religious site) and Foulpointe.
Île aux Prunes: Île aux Prunes is located 17 km from the port of Toamasina. The island is famous for the fact that, during the colonial era, the French built Africa’s highest lighthouse here, which is still in operation today. It’s an ideal spot for scuba diving, walking around the island and, above all, climbing to the top of the lighthouse to admire the beautiful scenery and the 360-degree panoramic view. You can also camp here and listen to the flapping wings of the bats that nest here every day.
Sainte-Marie: Sainte-Marie Island lies 35km east of the main island. It is a key site on the east coast, still protected from mass tourism. Every year, the whales come here to reproduce, taking advantage of the warm waters to develop their young before returning to the North Pole.
Masoala: Despite the poor road conditions to access the northern part of the island, Masoala is a veritable nature sanctuary.
