Day 1: Toamasina – Sainte-Marie
An early departure from Toamasina takes you to the embarkation point at Soanierana-Ivongo, located 162 km north of Toamasina. This departure point is preferred as the crossing to Sainte-Marie is shorter than from Mahambo, which takes over two hours. After about two hours of sailing, you’ll arrive at this beautiful island. Transfer to the hotel, not far from town.
In the afternoon, relax by the sea, near the small port called La Barachois in Ambodifotatra.
Overnight at a hotel in the city center.
Day 2: Excursion to the Natural Pool
Head to an excursion at the natural pool located at the northern tip of the island. Sainte-Marie offers picturesque and refreshing natural pools for visitors looking for a unique experience. The most visited is in Ambodiatafana, known for its rock formations that create a shallow pool sheltered from the ocean’s waves. Surrounded by lush vegetation, it’s a peaceful spot to swim and relax.
Lunch on-site. Return to town in the late afternoon.
Day 3: Sainte-Marie – Île aux Nattes
Excursion to Île aux Nattes: this small island, located at the southern tip of Sainte-Marie, is renowned for its natural beauty, white sandy beaches, and peaceful atmosphere. We offer a tour of the island by boat or on foot, depending on your preference. We will then take you to the Maison Blanche to admire the panoramic view of the mainland. If time allows, we’ll also visit the old lighthouse, known as Phare Blevec.
Lunch by the water. Return to town in the late afternoon.
Day 4: Visit to the Pirate Cemetery, First Catholic Church, and Queen’s Museum
Today, we’ll stay near the town. This day is dedicated to visiting the Pirate Cemetery. Sainte-Marie is famous for being a pirate hideout in the 17th and 18th centuries. Due to its pirate history, the island hosts several pirate cemeteries, though the term “pirate cemetery” may be misleading. These sites are not traditional cemeteries with tombstones but places where legendary pirates were buried, or allegedly buried.
After this visit, we’ll take you to see the first Catholic church, founded in 1837 by Bishop Dalmond.
Overnight at a hotel in the city center.
Day 5: Free Day in Sainte-Marie
Enjoy a free day to relax as you wish. If you like, you can return to the northern tip to swim in the turquoise waters.
Day 6: Return to Toamasina
Return to Toamasina. If you have some time left, why not spend a night at Foulpointe or Mahambo?
